New York Attorney General Letitia James has released body-worn camera footage from an investigation into the death of Robert Brooks, who died on December 10, 2024, following an encounter with correction officers at Marcy Correctional Facility in Oneida County.

The footage reveals officers violently beating Brooks, who was handcuffed with his hands behind his back, during a medical examination on December 9. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead in the early hours of December 10.

Attorney General James described the videos as “shocking and disturbing,” emphasizing her commitment to transparency and accountability in such matters. The Office of Special Investigation is conducting a thorough review of the incident.

In response to the incident, one correction officer has resigned, and 13 others have been suspended without pay. Governor Kathy Hochul has called for the termination of all individuals involved.

Robert Brooks, 43, had been serving a 12-year prison sentence for first-degree assault since 2017.

The release of this footage underscores the urgent need for systemic reforms to address the use of excessive force within correctional facilities.
