Actress Jurnee Smollett’s ex-husband, musician Josiah Bell, has filed a legal request for 50% of her retirement savings, including her Screen Actors Guild (SAG) pension, nearly four years after their divorce.
Bell is seeking half of the funds Smollett accrued in her retirement accounts during their marriage from 2010 to 2019.
The couple finalized their divorce in August 2021, with Smollett reportedly paying Bell nearly $1 million as part of the settlement. Since their separation in 2019, Bell has also been receiving $7,000 per month in combined child support and alimony for their son, Hunter Zion Bell.
Under California’s community property laws, assets accumulated during a marriage are typically divided equally. Bell’s recent filing suggests he believes he is entitled to a share of Smollett’s retirement earnings from their years together.
Smollett and Bell married in 2010 after years of friendship and welcomed their son in 2016. As of now, Smollett has not publicly addressed Bell’s latest legal move, and it remains unclear whether she will contest his request in court.
