When you sit down with Michaela P. Shelton, it doesn’t take long to feel the fire behind her words. A writer, actress, and entrepreneur, Shelton is the creative force behind Reckless Behavior — a millennial dramedy set in the Bay Area that’s already streaming on Tubi and Amazon Prime.
On a recent episode of Loca’s Vibe Check, I had the honor of welcoming her as my first female guest on the podcast. And let me tell you — she did not hold back.
The Birth of a Storyteller
For Shelton, storytelling has always been second nature.
“I’ve always known,” she told me. “When I was younger, I wrote little short stories. After college, I started a blog because life wasn’t what I expected. I was venting, people were relating, and it turned into a community. That’s when I thought, what if I make a show?”
That leap of faith eventually birthed Reckless Behavior, a slice-of-life series that captures the highs and lows of being a young Black millennial navigating friendships, careers, family, and heartbreak in the Bay.
Life Imitating Art
Shelton not only created the show — she stars in it, playing a version of herself in her mid-20s.
“Michaela Holloway [my character] is definitely me when I was 24, 25. Confused, making reckless decisions, trying to figure it out,” she admitted with a laugh.
But what sets Reckless Behavior apart is its unflinching honesty. From lighthearted moments of roommate drama to gut-wrenching storylines around suicide attempts, financial struggles, and caregiving, Shelton grounds her show in real experiences.
One powerful arc, she recalled, was about a young man forced into crime to pay for his mother’s medical care.
“It’s not condoning it, but sometimes you feel like you don’t have a choice. That’s real life,” Shelton said. “Writing that and then watching it play out on set was emotional — like, wow, this is someone’s reality.”
Building from Scratch
What makes Shelton’s journey even more inspiring is that she started with nothing but a vision and faith in herself.
“I had no idea what I was doing. I Googled everything — how to write a script, how to cast. My dad even let me use the church for auditions,” she shared.
She walked away from a steady 9-to-5 to pursue creativity full-time, even if it meant surviving off credit cards. “One day, I just woke up and said, I can’t do this job anymore. I have to create.”
With the help of her business partner, Imani Baylor, who believed in her vision and helped finance early seasons, Shelton turned Reckless Behavior into a grassroots success story.
Influences and Impact
When asked about her creative compass, Shelton credits Black women creators like Mara Brock Akil, Issa Rae, and even Tyler Perry.
“I just love seeing Black people shown as versatile,” she explained. “We’re not just one thing. Some of us have 9-to-5s, some are entrepreneurs, some are parents. That’s what I want Reckless Behavior to reflect — the full slice of our lives.”
At its core, Shelton hopes the series speaks especially to Black women navigating adulthood.
“I want Black women to know it’s okay not to have it all figured out. It’s okay to cry, to go to therapy, to not be perfect. Life is hard, but we don’t have to carry it all in silence.”
What’s Next
With three seasons of Reckless Behavior under her belt, Shelton isn’t slowing down.
“I love this show, but it’s just the beginning,” she revealed. “I want to explore more genres — a faith-based series, a thriller, a comedy. I just finished writing something funny, and it felt so good.”
Her journey from frustrated blogger to full-time creative proves what happens when talent meets grit, faith, and community support.
And for anyone chasing their own dream, Shelton leaves this reminder: “Even if you just write two pages today, you did something. Keep going.”
✨ Reckless Behavior is streaming now on Tubi (Seasons 1 & 2) and Amazon Prime (Season 3).
